Rebellion is the first of three novels in the Chronicles of Charanthe series.
Rebellion Chronicles of Charanthe Book 1 edition by Rachel Cotterill Literature Fiction eBooks
Born into a society where your future is assessed and a job assigned to you, Eleanor opts out of her dead-end assignment. Deciding to follow the clues leading to the unknown, and possibly non-existent, elite society of assassins, Eleanor finds herself on the run. Working with smugglers, she ends up another country... and over her head. Will Eleanor be able to survive imprisonment, return to her own country, and still follow her dreams?Rebellion is a very unique book in the world of government-heavy, dystopian novels. Instead of fighting against an oppressive society, Eleanor simply walks away from the path accepted by most everyone else. In her goal to find the Association, she turns from a naive and somewhat spoiled girl to a strong woman who is willing to fight for what she wants. The characters in this story are not perfect... especially not Eleanor. Her troubles start because of her own actions and lack of foresight, and she really doesn't start thinking until her life is on the line. She does improve, however, and the plot is interesting and complex enough to keep you reading.

Rebellion Chronicles of Charanthe Book 1 edition by Rachel Cotterill Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
3 1/2 stars for me, leaning to 4. This books feels more like two put together. The first half focuses on danger and intrigue, where Eleanor has to escape actual danger and death to return home after being outcast from her school. The second half is really just her training in the assassin's academy. That's it.
The plot is pretty straightforward but it's still quite a fun read. I found myself not liking the second half so much as the first however, because of the lack of actual "action". Sure Eleanor has these tests she needs to pass to get approval from her peers, but really there's not that much going on, and they're really easy tests too.
I did however like the few twists and turns, and the characters were thoroughly enjoyable. My one complaint is Eleanor's "turn for the worse" as I would put it. I liked her much better in the first half where she at least didn't make everything about winning. It's her flaw though, along with being stubborn, impatient, and willingly putting others at risk. Which means she still has a lot of growing to do.
I'm not sure I will buy the sequel, although I am curious to see how the author will strengthen Daniel x Eleanor's relationship (which seems likely to happen, I think the author had a change of heart for Raf).
I finished the book thinking, "Eh..." because while it wraps up well, I didn't exactly like Eleanor's attitude anymore.
I have just finished reading Rachel Cotterill first book in the series Chronicles of Charanthe and the First Book is REBELLION .
I have been waiting to read this book for several years after I knew Rachel was writing it, and it was everything I had hoped for and far more!
The author was able to build up a real working world that you feel there. Fully in her world, it is not just the descriptions of the world around her character Eleanor but details as types of food and cultures that she has created a living world for the reader to step into and join Eleanor as she leaves school to start on a life full of adventure.
Wanting to leave the comforts of a government school and a job already selected for her, Eleanor has her hart set upon becoming an Assassin which is not the sort of thing a nice young girl should even know about let alone dream of becoming!
As the book progresses you feel that you grow up with Eleanor as she makes her way through life.
So without giving any more away all I can say is that this is a must read, and I am personally looking forward to the next in the series.
This coming of age story promised more than it delivered. Our heroine Eleanor pursues a nebulous possibility for a career, and in the process is hunted, kidnapped, tortured, coerced, resented, and finally taught. But the story ends rather abruptly with an ambivalent conclusion, giving all of the previous chapters the feel of an ongoing serial. I suppose much will be resolved in the next book, but I don't feel like going there.
This is a solid book. Or, as one other reviewer commented, two halves in one book. The first part is very much about a girl trying to find herself, and finding herself in a lot of trouble. The second part is about her trying to fit into a place once she's found 'herself', and doing her best to succeed at what is, really, a very extended training montage. I've picked up the second book, and I'm hoping that once she is on her own, things may move apace.
New lands, filled with new adventures and fresh new characters make the first installment of Rachel Cotterill’s Chronicles of Charanthe an exciting and captivating read. Rebellion introduces a new world, a new type of government and culture, and a brave young woman who is destined to change her destiny. Cotterill has painted a vibrant setting and landscape filled with delicious little nuances that add depth to this great story line. Rebellion, the first book of the Chronicles of Charanthe is full of action and mystery as two young would be assassins fight their way to grasp the future they would have for themselves. Escaping captivity, solving puzzles and capturing clues set the brazen Eleanor and her partner in crime Raf right in the middle of a clash between empires. If that isn’t enough to get you into this book, then Cotterill’s creative writing style and acute attention to detail will.
